Alex Khun
Alex Khun (1st Vice President) enjoys helping people within his capacity whenever and wherever he can. He likes living a simple but meaningful and compassionate life. He joins CANS because he understands how difficult life is for newly arrived students in Australia.
Alex has a strong working ethic and wants CANS to become a respectable and effective volunteer organisation working for the benefits of Cambodian-Australian students and disadvantaged kids back home. He wants to see more scholarships being offered to the Cambodian poor to give them a better chance in life.
He was once a young high school student himself. At that time, life was extremely difficult for him. Alex didn’t know many people in Australia. Initially, Alex faced a huge language barrier and life wasn’t that fun. But his persistence and perseverance allowed him to finally graduate from a Bachelor of Engineering in Telecommunications and Internet Technologies from Swinburne University of Technologies.
Alex had been working in IT for while before he started his career as a public broadcaster in 2005. His commitment to his adopted philosophy of life-long-learning sees him completed a Master of International Development at RMIT. Now he’s furthering his study in Master of Media and Communication, but still at RMIT University.
Before joining CANS, for many years Alex had volunteered with a number of organisations in Melbourne including the Cambodian Buddhist Association of Victoria, Buddhist Council of Victoria and Buddha Bodhivanna Monastery. He was a founding member and Public Relation Officer at the Save Cambodian Children Fund Australia. Alex had been teaching Khmer to children in Melbourne at a Saturday School for a number of years. He is also a NAATI accredited and experienced translator and has been working as freelance English-Khmer translator since 2004.
Alex loves his birth country and wants to see a peaceful Cambodia revives itself, stands on its own feet, less dependent on foreign aid and become a prosperous and sustainable nation where basic human rights is respected and an equitable society exists.
